Ingredients
- 1 cup (200g) red lentils
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- ½ tsp chili powder (adjust to taste)
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cilantro or herb of your choice for garnish
Instructions
- Rinse red lentils thoroughly and set aside.
- Heat vegetable oil in a pot over medium heat. Add finely chopped onion and sauté until golden.
- Stir in minced garlic and cook until aromatic.
- Add finely chopped tomatoes to the pot. Cook until the tomatoes break down and form a thick base.
- Add ground turmeric, ground cumin, ground coriander, and red chili powder. Mix well and cook for 2 minutes.
- Add rinsed red lentils to the pot. Pour in enough water to cover the lentils.
- Simmer until lentils are soft and creamy, stirring occasionally.
- Season with salt to taste and garnish with fresh cilantro or fresh herb of your choice.
- Serve Masoor Dal over rice or with Naan bread or your preferred bread.
Pro tip: For added depth and a smoky flavor, char the red bell pepper and chili peppers before adding them to your Peri Peri sauce. This enhances their sweetness and complexity.
