Ingredients

  • 1 cup (200g) red lentils
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • ½ tsp chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro or herb of your choice for garnish

Instructions

  1. Rinse red lentils thoroughly and set aside.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a pot over medium heat. Add finely chopped onion and sauté until golden.
  3. Stir in minced garlic and cook until aromatic.
  4. Add finely chopped tomatoes to the pot. Cook until the tomatoes break down and form a thick base.
  5. Add ground turmeric, ground cumin, ground coriander, and red chili powder. Mix well and cook for 2 minutes.
  6. Add rinsed red lentils to the pot. Pour in enough water to cover the lentils.
  7. Simmer until lentils are soft and creamy, stirring occasionally.
  8. Season with salt to taste and garnish with fresh cilantro or fresh herb of your choice.
  9. Serve Masoor Dal over rice or with Naan bread or your preferred bread.

Pro tip: For added depth and a smoky flavor, char the red bell pepper and chili peppers before adding them to your Peri Peri sauce. This enhances their sweetness and complexity.
